New Technology that Change Donor Kidney Blood Type

Recently, Cambridge University announced their new breakthrough in kidney transplantation. They uses new molecular technology to change donor kidney blood type in order to overcome immunological barrier from blood group incompatibility.

In general, the blood group antibody from transplant recipient is the main culprit to cause rejection reaction to transplant organ in situation of blood group incompatibility. Current blood group incompatible kidney transplant is achieve by 'desensitization' protocol. Desensitization is a process to lower the blood group antibody of the kidney transplant recipient prior transplant and prevent rejection. This is a well establish strategy worldwide and able to achieve comparable patient and graft survival.

Cambridge new technique is to change the donor kidney blood group by 'molecular scissor'. The transplant community is now awaiting the formal publication about this new technique to review its clinic use.
